Getting your photos taken can feel intimidating, especially if it’s your first time. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before, during, and after. I try to keep everything simple and easy to follow.

What to Expect

What happens at the session? I scout and choose locations ahead of time, so we’ll be ready to go. During the first few minutes, I’ll guide you through a few fun prompts to help you warm up and get comfortable. Most of my posing is action-based, like sneaking up behind your partner for a hug! So you naturally fall into cute, genuine moments without feeling stiff or awkward. I’ll gently guide and adjust you if needed, but sessions usually flow very naturally.

Sessions are timed, but you don’t need to watch the clock, I’ve got that covered. If we need an extra 5–10 minutes to capture the perfect shot, that’s totally okay. My priority is creating images you love.

I’ll take the lead, but this is your session. If you have ideas, I’m always happy to include them! Think of it like a fun date with your partner… and I’m just the third wheel, haha!

Planning Your Session

01. Decide the vibe you want.

Do you want to cuddle up in the back of a pickup and watch the sunset with your partner? Visit your favorite coffee shop and share sips? Play at the park with your dog?

Are there any props you want to bring? A stack of books you read together, a bouquet of flowers, a pet? Activities and props are not required, but they help make photos come to life!

Some activity ideas:

• Having a picnic
• Dancing in the bed of a pickup
• Fishing at your favorite spot
• Walking through downtown grabbing coffee
• Cooking together
• Listening to music and slow dancing
• Watching the sunset
• Exploring a trail or field
• Visiting a meaningful location

02. Find Your Location

Locations play a big role in achieving photos you love. Do you picture dark, moody shots in a wooded area? Golden sun-lit images under open skies? Or maybe the cozy, soft light of a coffee shop?

Click the arrow to see some of my favorite session locations. If you have a special place in mind or access to private property, I am always open to exploring new locations with you!

Please note: location details and access can vary depending on season and weather.

What to Wear?

The easiest way to coordinate is by choosing a color palette instead of matching exactly.

• Choose shades that complement each other
• Neutrals and earth tones photograph beautifully
• Soft pastels or rich, muted colors also work well
• Avoid neon, it reflects light and distracts from emotion

Less is more.

• If one person wears a pattern, the other should wear solids
• Small, subtle patterns photograph best
• Avoid bold prints, graphics, or logos

Your connection should be the focus, not the clothing.

Textures add depth and interest without feeling busy.

Choose:
• Knits
• Linen or gauze fabrics
• Woven or layered materials

Movement also brings photos to life:
• Flowing dresses
• Skirts
• Loose layers that catch natural motion

Hair & Makeup Tips!

A lot of clients ask about makeup! I always recommend wearing what you normally do. Unless we’re shooting with flash, your makeup won’t get washed out or need extra application. I suggest bringing touch-up items, and you’re always welcome to pause the session to fix anything if needed.

Men: Plan to get a haircut about 1–2 weeks before your session, so it has time to blend naturally. Also, think about facial hair. Do you prefer a full beard, light stubble, or clean-shaven? Time your shave accordingly.

  • Double-check the session time and location address. Keep an eye on your phone & stay flexible, I may ask to adjust the time due to weather.
  • Make sure outfits are ready, clean, and wrinkle-free.
  • Bring a lint roller (just in case!).
  • Bring extra makeup, a brush, or any touch-up items you may need.
  • Props (if applicable): blankets, picnic baskets, pets (yes, please!), or flowers. Men - flowers are your assignment!
  • Water bottle -  it’s Iowa, and sessions can happen in 90° heat. Please bring anything you need to stay comfortable and take care of yourself!
